Article #1:"Ban Sheng Yuan" Broadcast Tonight
Hangzhou Daily
"She likes to delve into the character, often asking me how a particular performance should be improved, has very strong work ethics. As to acting skills (laughing).....I feel that at this day & age, one shouldn't put too much emphasis on acting skills, we are not engineers, needing techniques, to be able to perform real emotions is good enough for actors. I feel that Lin Xinru can release her own real emotions into the performance, already is not an easy thing."
This section of speech, is winner of Golden Elephant Best Supporting Role, Hong Kong actor Patrick Tam's evaulation of his co-star, Lin Xinru in "Ban Sheng Yuan". There is some deep & profound meaning to this.
35 episode TV series "Ban Sheng Yuan" will be broadcasting tonight on the Zhejiang Education Science & Technology Channel. Because the copyright of "Ban Sheng Yuan" belongs to Qiong Yao's husband's Crown publishing company, also has the two stars made famous by Qiong Yao, Lin Xinru, & Jiang Qinqin, there's always the question in people's hearts, whether this most praised Zhang Ailing novel will end up like a Qiong Yao version?
The media had a first look at the first episode yesterday, the picture is bright & beautiful, the opening scene has an intense dramatic conflict, the plot grasps at the people's hearts. But playing the leading role of Manzhen's Lin Xinru, from character image to performance still could not escape QSSYMM's old routine. But playing elder sister Manlu's Jiang Qinqin, & playing the bastard brother-in-law Zhu Hongcai's Li Liqun performing skills are to the point.
The novel already had Wu Qianlian, Anita Mui, Leon Lai's film version, whether the TV series is a success or not still arouse people's attention. It is reported, the TV station paid "the ultimate price" of $60,000 RMB per episode to purchase this serial, before this was the record purchase price for CCTV version of "Condor Heroes" of $70,000 RMB.

Article #2:"Ban Sheng Yuan": Surmounting Qiong Yao's Beautiful Romance Serials
Hangzhou Daily
With an abundance of broadcasts, if don't harshly use Zhang Ailing's "Eighteen Springs" & Xu Anhua's[she's director of film version] "Ban Sheng Yuan" as a reference, this TV series of the same name "Ban Sheng Yuan" also is quite fine, at least from the standpoint of the demands of a TV series, this serial's actors are pretty, wardrobe dazzling, the scenes are beautiful.
The story is a good story: 1930's Shanghai, Gu Manzhen and co-worker[colleague] Shen Shihjun falls in love, never thought that businessman brother-in-law wished to possess the pure Manzhen, the prostitute elder sister Manlu to flatter her husband set a trap to impregnate another woman to have his child.....
Frequently playing tearful, pitiful characters in Qiong Yao's dramas, this time plays someone sacrificing herself for the family, b/c of frustations w/ her marriage turned into a callous rude prostitute, I dare to say, as a result of this character, I'm anxious for those whom will again call Jiang Qinqin a vase. Maybe b/c of her youth, she lacked Anita Mui's kind of rich & strong sense of turmoils & hardships, but showed the envious hatred and helplessness when slighted by the clients, the unscrupulous prostitute protecting her family members, finally to save her marriage she sacrificed her younger sister & to contradict herself in her defenses for her own sinister acts, all extremely to the point. Her performance perhaps a bit too straightforward, but at least lets audience to pity her, to hate her, & to sympathize w/ her.
In comparison, Lin Xinru's performance is a bit ordinary, no matter how you look she's still that QSSYMM's silly Lu Ruping---pinching her small throat to speak, wrinkle eyebrows to shed tears, showing those big innoncent eyes, far too different from the book's calm, gentle Gu Manchen, all reporters who viewed this piece questioned---Is the script written by Auntie Qiong Yao? Sigh, cannot help but to think back of the film version's leading lady---small-eyed Wu Qianlian.
Although Lin Xinru's performance is not up to par, her costumes are very attractive, even going to work in the cotton mill w/ white party skirt, very pretty & charming among the simply dressed female workers, is a flower amongst groves of green bushes. Moreover, her elder sister Jiang Qinqin's qibao[Chinese gown] are quite attractive, those who like qibaos can have them made this way. Regarding the costumes, the producers put in a big budget for them.
As for this series' scenes---like people's faces, peach flowers or what have you, were shot directly in reference to the MTV standards, matches very well the beautiful love story, very eye catching.
If you have time, have a look, has a bit more reminiscence than Qiong Yao's dramas, also unlike some of those too proper whatever dynasty to tire you, not bad not bad.
Special reminder: "BSY" Zhejiang Education Science & Technology Channel 6:50 broadcast
