Susi's Summary of Flying Knife, 7/6/03

Singapore already have Flying Knife VCD, the first 21 episodes.

I finished watching 12 episodes already. Ruby's "Yueshen" won't appear until episode 8. Mom only appears in the 1st 2 episodes, then dies...
The 1st 7 episodes is mainly about the young "Yueshen" & her father's scenes...

Because up 'till now, Yueshen doesn't appear much, so can't say too much. But she is really cold. Did not smile at all, she speaks very coldly too. Her dialogue's very short. Ruby's fighting is quite good. A lot of them she did herself.

Also, that Keke character is really disappointing! If she's not being noisy, then she hitting people, throwing things! Like she's very unreasonable! Is it like this in the novel? In comparison, Yueshen is so much better. She doesn't cry & not noisy! Just ...very...very...very cold. Doesn't like to speak! Furthermore, she's a very decent(nice, gentle?) person...Episode 8-10, Yueshen has not become an assassin yet. Just an innocent young girl, only wanted to avenge her father's death. She became an assassin in episode 13 or 14 (not too sure). Compare to that Keke, she's more adorable. Don't worry! Yueshen's appearance is a bright spot! Her scenes are more expandable!

Keke also (appears) episode 8, Yueshen also...but the beginning of ep. 8, Keke's scenes are more than Yueshen's, Li Huai's also. Stipulate Yueshen's scenes are more towards the later parts! Yueshen's first appearance is to seek Li Huai's dad for revenge. She lost the fight!

There's no theme song, only music!

Can say finished the 21 episodes. Because scenes w/o Ruby, I forward. In these 21 episodes, Ruby's scenes are too few. The 1st 7 episodes are about the father & little Yueshen. Mom only appeared 2 episodes. Yueshen appeared in ep. 8 for a little bit. Waited until ep 12 (still appeared a little bit) 14, 15, 16 is more. Because shows how she became an assassin. Ep. 17, 18 is Keke & Li Huai's scenes. Episode 19 Ruby a little bit. Ep. 20 doesn't have Ruby, ep 21 start to get better. Because Yueshen was summoned to kill Li Huai. This episode they meet. Yueshen told Li Huai he is the person she has to kill, but Li Huai didn't believe her, thought she was joking. Therefore, Li became curious about Yueshen. Wanted to get close to her(or pursue her). He wanted to know the reason, why Yueshen wanted to kill him. Li was to marry Keke, b/c couldn't stand her bad temperament, both argued, went their separate ways.

From ep. 22 & on are Yueshen & Li Huai's scenes. B/C in ep. 21, Li wanted to know why Yueshen wanted to kill him. This, Yueshen purposely did not tell him, let him become curious about her! B/C she wanted Li to follow her.....
But the other half of the VCDs are not here yet.

Talk about the actors' performance
Ruby's portrayal of mom is not too long, she's a gentle, pretty mother! Yueshen up to this point is always fighting, have not seen her smile yet! Very cold! Never opening her mouth, at most say a couple sentences.

But Yueshen's image is very good. Ruby also very pretty! Such a beautiful swordswoman! Even though her scenes aren't much, Ruby's "Yueshen" will definitely leave a deep impression. This is Ruby's real fighting series. Dong Jie's portrayal of Keke is not too standout, always hitting people, scolding at people, throwing things. She appears from ep. 8-21, not once is she not temperamental. No matter, this way can show that Ruby stands out more! If didn't compare, didn't know that Ruby looks better than that Dong. Then there's Li Huai, performance up to this point is average. Did not leave any deep impression! Acting is also average. Of all the characters in here, "Yueshen" stands out the most!

There's 1 scene (episode 26) she used a very villainous smile[or laugh--not sure about the wording] & look in her eyes to look at the swordsman she had just defeated.
This smile/look was detected by Li Huai, asks Yue why do you smile/laugh like this?
Yue immediately made up a lie, did I smile/laugh like that? Perhaps it's b/c I was thinking once I defeat him, then we can be together forever, b/c I was too happy, so I smiled/laughed. (Because Tiandi [<--Heaven Earth--that's the secret society of assasins that Ruby is a member of] wanted her to defeat world's #1 swordsman then will let her leave w/ Li).
Li believed Yue's explanation. The fact was Li really loved Yue, it's just Yue wanted to use him, being w/ him b/c she wanted to learn the secrets of "flying knife" technique. So at present Yue's love for Li is fake.
But in order to have Li to be mesmerized, w/o ever changing the look on her face, she would sweet talk all day long to Li.
Therefore she had Li deceived from head to toe. Ha ha! Yueshen is so bad. From all the characters Ruby has played, this might be consider a breakthrough! Don't think that Ruby look delicate & weak, she can also play characters that are bad[in nature]. Especially when you look at that villainous smile on her face! Performed it very much to the point. Her fighting is getting better & better! Look very much like a swordswoman!
That's right, that Leng Xiaoxing loves Yueshen, but Yue has no interest in her, b/c Yue only likes men.
In episode 27, Yue & Li has a kissing scene(fortunately of 43 episodes only have 1 scene, otherwise someone will jump up).
But that kissing scene was not like an ordinary kiss! It was fiercer than in "BSY". Can say that this is the most intense kissing scene since Ruby has been acting.
In 28,29,30 three episodes are all Yue & Li's scenes. To avoid the pursue of Tiandi, ran off to Japan to live a life together.
This was the happiest of times for Yue, she abandoned that heavy burden, enjoying this short term love. Also is the time that Yue smiles the most. Finally can she her bright smiles. Yue is actually quite pitiable. For revenge, she had to continuously suppress her love for Li.

A lot of people thought that this serial gears toward the male lead? I do not agree.
Although Yueshen's scenes aren't as much as Li's, but each of her appearances in each scene are very important.
Her lines aren't many, but that doesn't mean her scenes are not important. B/C Yueshen herself is cold, she doesn't like to smile & talk.
Because she's not a happy person, also is an assassin, she keeps all her feelings inside, she's proud/arrogant.
One cannot easily see all of her emotions.....
I like that she doesn't talk much, only have that light/simple frail and beautiful look of her eyes. No wonder when Li saw her, said she is a very special person.
He's enamored by her coldness & her arrogance.

I originally thought that Li's fighting scenes were many. What caused me to drop my eyeglasses was Yueshen's fighting was the most.
Li basically doesn't have a lot of fighting scenes. The period before he met Yueshen, he was always acting mooshy w/ Keke, laughing and joking.
B/C he yearns for a loving family, whenever he sees a woman he loves he wants to get married w/ that person.
Previously it was Keke(almost got married), then it was Yueshen.....

If Yueshen's lines are many, then it's Yueshen. It won't have that feeling of coldness.....
During her time in Japan w/ Li, this part, Yueshen's lines increased, her smile were also more
Like a little woman. I couldn't believe what I saw in front of me was that cold Yueshen? Still not used to it after watching it!
I still like her boastful talk towards her challengers, her sneers towards the defeated, her indifference/coldness to Li.
Most of Yueshen's lines do not surpass six sentences, like.....
Come w/ me! What's wrong w/ you! I'm here to rescue you!
The most memorable moment for me was this part: Leng Xiaoxing didn't want Yueshen to leave, got hold of her hand from behind & wouldn't let go of it.....
Yue very coldly said to her: [elder]Sister, please let go of the hand, Yueshen has grown up already.
Although they are short, Yue did not have any intense language or movement
But you can feel her commanding presence, can't help it but fear a bit.....
Yue in the 2nd part has more to say, & more smiles is when she became a mother.
That baby is really adorable. He can smile on his own. When you hold him, he smiles at you, also makes [baby]sounds.
Don't have the previous coldness/indifference, more of maternal love.
(PS...perhaps Xinru has played in a lot mommy roles lately, has more of a motherly feel, look more and more like a mother).
Some people think that having many scenes means good. But I do not think so. Keke's scenes in the beginning are many, but did not leave any deep impressions behind!
B/C her role is redundant. Each episode was of her throwing tantrums, if you see a little less of her in 1-2 episodes doesn't really make any difference.
Therefore the ability to expand/challenge each role is very important. Less screen times can still become the bright spot.
Keke & Yueshen are same age. Two completely different personalities. Both also had a rough childhood.....
Keke likes to throw her [rich girl] tantrums. It's as if the whole world owes her. She won't even let the person she loves off the hook either. When she's a little unhappy, people around her suffers. Li also not an exception.
Therefore, why Li wants to embrance another. The love for Li, Keke was the one making the initiative. Yue is passive.
Yue won't throw of her tempers towards Li or hit, or scold. Because her emotions, you cannot see.
Therefore Li was very interested w/ her b/c he couldn't guess whether Yue loves him or not! This you can say is that Li pursues her.
But Yue wanted to kill him then rescues him. She got the intelligent, smart Li Huai running in circles. This is Yues ability.
When Yue treats Li a bit kinder, Li would be very happy. Becoming more enamored w/ her.
So why did Li teach Yue the flying knife techique & its secrets? B/c he trusts her too much, also he loves her very much.....
(PS: I careful saw it again, still pretty good. Yue's appearances are in episodes 8,9,10,12,14,15,16,19,21. From episodes 22-31 are mainly about Yue & Li.....episode 32 they both separated. Episode 32-34 is Keke & Li's scenes.
I think episode 35 Yue's scenes are back to normal.....)

There are a lot of closeups of Yueshen, very attractive, also very beautiful!
Really! Watching it again, really like her coldness. I have never seen Xinru this cold before!

Just thought of some part that's quite fun. It's when Yueshen just joined "Tiandi society".
Yue is very arrogant. She didn't like that the other person outranked her. Wanted Yue to listen to her & be her subordinate. Also telling her what to do.
Yue refused to accept this & fought w/ that person. The result was Yue won.
Tiandi society leader was very angry w/ Yue & scolded her. Yue just stared at his scoldings for awhile w/o any emotions on her face, then the leader's scoldings sufficed, he was tired. He saied a bunch of lines. Then it was Yueshen's turn to speak. Yue only said: Done talking? That's it. Such a COOL Yueshen
The lines were very short! This is Yueshen!
He replied & said he was not done talking! Another bunch of lines. Said I saved your life, I can have you killed right now! (Explanation: it was before she became an assassin, she killed an official. This was "Tiandi's" setup. They wanted Yue to join Tiandi Society. Captured her then save. Their goal was they wanted Yue to repay the debt of gratitude & willing to be used as Tiandi society's assassin).
Ha ha! Yue was still expressionless! Then it was Yue turn to respond, this time there were more lines:
"Never wanted your rescue! didn't even fear the guilotine! Still feel the same way!"
After saying those line, left w/o even looking back. Watching Yueshen w/ so much character, so cold & arrogant. This is Yueshen! Fearless
The leader could only stare, stump his feet, couldn't do anything else to her!
Yue doesn't bow down to force, she buys into gentleness.
B/C she has a good heart, even though she is an assassin murderer!

Finally finished. My hands are shaky & my heart's pounding b/c I'm watching BSY & translating at the same time. I skipped to the part where Manzhen got raped. Oh man.....
