TV Series "Ban Sheng Yuan" Trailers Shown Yesterday Qiong Yao Flavor Corrodes Zhang Ailing
Shanghai Morning Post, 9/24/03
Half of Zhang Ailing's charm lies in her writing, the other in details. But once its put in front of plot-conscience TV audience, it will be difficult to have both, this may explain why the first TV adaptation of Lin Hsinju, Jiang Qinqin, & Tan Yaowen's version "BSY" is being disputed. Yesterday, the creators came to Shanghai to promote this serial, airing on prime time October 2, 2 episodes per evening, the trailers shown gave the people a deep feeling of "looking at a flower in a fog": looking at the main actors in qipao & western wear of the 1930s profoundly embracing each other, people[<--meaning dumb reporter] started whispering "straight from QSSYMM". Then it started to snow on the screen, "Endless Love"[or A Tale of Autumn], voices from below again started. Towards the end of the showing, when the main actors got soaked by rain, everyone started thinking of F4's TV series where Shancai & Daomingsi separated.....
Is this a famous Zhang Ailing work or another copy of a Qiong Yao idol TV series? Reporters shortly after gave the questions to the director, Hu Xueyang, who once directed the idol TV series "OL Apartment". He firmly replied "If we shoot in accordance to the original work of Zhang Ailing, then it will definitely be a failure", & also simultaneously denied he purposely followed Qiong Yao's path to win over viewers: "A little rain means idol? Qiong Yao did even start becoming famous when I was young, her ways/path will not affect my creativity".
Hu Xuiyang also acknowledged that adapting Ms. Zhang's writing indeed was difficult: "In the beginning the script was most heavily focused on Jiang Qinqin and Li Lichun ¡X ¡X one is a prostitute, one is a gangster, it was easier create to scenes[or showcase or something]", but as we were writing the script, we discovered if continue to take this pathway then it's not Zhang Ailing, so we went back, increased affectionate scenes for Lin Hsinju and Tan Yaowen.
Perhaps these words may explain why the trailers seemed different in four directions, but yesterday the director did not forget to shout: "The difficulty in shooting a Zhang Ailing work is that everyone knows what she is saying, but all directors have their own different views, I ask that everyone be patient & see how we say it". Then there are the actors who portrayed the sisters Manlu & Manzhen, Jiang Qinqin & Lin Hsinju, are coincidentally got famous from Qiong Yao's dramas, now wants to borrow Zhang Ailing to change their image. Yesterday, both came Shanghai to promote the series, the reporters' questions naturally asked them about their "image-changing story from Qiong Yao to Zhang Ailing".
