Lin Xinru: Farewell to Princess Ziwei
Eastday news, 10/2/03
TV series "Ban Sheng Yuan", adapted from Zhang Ailing's novel of the same name, will begin airing tonight on Shanghai Television TV Drama Channel. The anticipation by Lin Xinru of this drama to start a new area/style of acting, [her] performances in this series are outstanding[or to be commended], gives a great feeling of bidding farewell to "Princess Ziwei".
"BSY" is about a tragic love relationship in 1930's Shanghai -- Manzhen & Sichun have fallen in love, older sister Manlu in order to care for her family of seven, started her life as a dancing girl/prostitute at 17. Manlu's prime has passed, the husband looked severe & solemn, but was actually full of evil thoughts. Manlu in order to save this marriage in name only, helped her husband to tarnish[rape] her own younger sister. Years later, Manzhen, who had already had a child for Zhu Hongcai, & the now married Sichun met by chance, facing each other but had nothing to say.....
Lin Xinru played the pure Manzhen in the series. Perhaps wanted to use this new drama to change image, Lin Xinru said the pressure was enormous while shooting "BSY", small red dots mysteriously appeared on her whole body, scratching made it swelled up, went to the doctor but did not find any illness. Until returning to Taiwan after the shoot for a follow-up visit, she only then knew that her immunity system was out of balance due to the oversized pressure. She said that, this was the first drama that gave her an immense sense of being lost and lonely after filming, watching it now on TV brings her back to time of the shoot, goosebumps starts to appear all over her body.
Lin Xinru said that, Zhang Ailing's book doesn't tell you when to cry while acting, but she has the ability from the start to heavily pull you into her moods & you can't come out of it. Acting in a Zhang Ailing novel cannot help but let her be fully committed, from reading the script to analyzing the script on the set, to training very hard to work on the look of her eyes & her body language, but she still was delighted w/ the busywork. Her commitment also infected crew members on the set, when filming the emotional reunion scene w/ Tan Yaowen, she caused the entire crew to be teary-eyed, almost forgot about the cameras.
