Patrick Tam: Being Persistant for Love Three Unfinished Love
- - "She (Astrid Chan Chihching) unwilling to be the woman behind Patrick Tam "will never have her heart, there's no distinction from reality."
- - "Along with the love for Gu Manchen, one day I discovered that I had fallen in love with her (Lin Hsinju)."
- - "The most romantic thing was on her (current girlfriend) birthday kneeling down to propose."
Before interviewing Patrick Tam, all questions were prepared just for "Ban Sheng Yuan", how will this person, a Golden Horse Best Supporting Actor winner famous for playing bad guys, play a Shanghai male w/ deep literary flavor? One who had been comedic, been sinister, but how will a man who lacks a weak, suppressed nature challenge "Mr. Lai's" classic version of Shen Shihchun? How will a Hong Kong actor, who previously does not know any Mandarin, prepare w/ his co-star? But during the interview inadvertently touched on Patrick Tam's deep emotions for these three women - - Astrid Chan Chihching, Lin Hsinju, current girlfriend. These three women thus caused this interview to somewhat deviate from the anticipated track, but because of that, the entire interview process turned relaxing & satisfying, also lets Patrick Tam, who was in Beijing for the 1st time to do promos, to be full of vitality.
"Movie playing out like real life", is what Patrick Tam used describe his personal relationship 5 years ago: love at 1st sight, being persistent for love, but in the end all ended, the dream left w/ the person, just like the lukewarm feelings for old flame Chen Chihching in "File of Justice", & also like in "Ban Sheng Yuan" the love Shihchun & Manchen painstakingly strive for but cannot have. Five years have passed, Patrick Tam now most wanted to express has two words "to enjoy"-- enjoying every moment of his relationship and work, enjoying happiness & romantic from loving & being loved, he swore he'll use his entire life to love her dearly. One can see, this is a man who wants a career but will not easily give up on love, is exquisitely rich w/ feelings, carrying all problems on his shoulders by himself.
Relationship 1: Lin Hsinju -- suddenly discovered I really have fallen in love with her
Reporter: Before filming "Ban Sheng Yuan", how much understanding do you have of the daily life of a Shanghai gentleman in the 1930s-40s?
Patrick: Did not understand, but I like the daily life of that era, several of my friends like photography, I also like being a model, often taking out my overcoats to shoot w/, after that will find a place to drink coffee, talk about movies, that sort of feeling, I think, are not much different from that period, that was how I pass my youth.
Reporter: Do you like this character of Shihchun?
Patrick: In these few years I hope to not duplicate "him" again. Because it was really exhausting, he always has love to give, his love was also very tiring, his innermost feelings are always at a struggle, his affections are never too intense, it was always mild & suppressed. In one scene, Shihchun reuniting w/ Manchen after 14 years, during filming Hsinju & I cried nonstop for 4 hours, performing it made me felt really sad.
Reporter: Does it mean that it was very difficult to pull yourself out from the role, cannot control oneself after such love?
Patrick: Have to concentrate[to dwell into character] to love her, if not like this, then cannot perform the heart-broken feelings for each other after more than 10 years of separation.
Reporter: Can you be a bit clearer on this, is it falling in love w/ the character of Manchen, or falling in love w/ Hsinju?
Patrick: Mmm -- it's really falling in love w/ Hsinju. This topic is quite sensitive, but to be honest, along with loving Manchen more & more, I also started to fall in love w/ Hsinju, b/c after 4 months of shooting, we had a mutual understing of each other, mutually cared about each other, the feelings she gives people is she's a nice/good girl to be doted on, actually she has a lot of character, the method she used to dwell into the character's feelings was very natural, very direct, is not an intent effort. There are a lot of things in which I admired about her.
Relationship 2: Chen Chihching -- heart got pulled further, why not separate

Relationship 3: Current girlfriend -- Will dote on her

Reporter: Cannot cross b/w pretend & reality while filming emotional scenes, but how do you explain falling in love with Lin Hsinju?
Patrick: I did not cross the line, will not overdo it, that's why w/i a short period of time I will not shoot any scenes w/ innermost feelings. The girlfriend understood it, I was also very honest & told her.
Reporter: What's the most romantic thing you've done for her:
Patrick: The most romantic thing--was December of last year on her birthday I proposed to her. The date is set for the end of this year.
Reporter: In what way did you propose to her?
Patrick: Very tranquil - - knelt down? Certainly did. Skipping the rest....
